Infelizmente, nos últimos 20-50 anos, perderam-se 50% das salinas, 35% dos mangais e 29% das ervas marinhas. As florestas de algas também estão a enfrentar um declínio global da abundância de 1,8% por ano. Embora os esforços de recuperação sejam cruciais para a recuperação de ecossistemas degradados, a preservação do que já existe é frequentemente considerada uma estratégia mais eficaz e eficiente.
